The Dena Kohn
IN MEMORIAM The Dena Kohn Memorial Scholarship Fund was established, with the support of Dena’s family, by the members of the company of Ragtime, performed at The Theatre Lab School of the Dramatic Arts in Washington, DC in 2004. Dena played the role of the “Little Girl,” and touched all of us with the size of her heart, both on and off stage. On stage, she gave such a beautiful performance and off stage, it was easy to see the beautiful spirit that gave birth to a life of service. It is our hope to keep both her memory and her spirit of giving alive. With this goal in mind, and cognizant of Dena’s passion for musical theatre, The Dena Kohn Memorial Scholarship will be awarded each year to a deserving teenager to allow them to participate in The Theatre Lab’s Musical Theatre Institute for Teens. This is an intensive four-week training program that takes place each summer in which participants rehearse and perform a full musical production under the guidance of one of the DC area’s most esteemed directors. The idea behind the institute is to enable young artists to explore challenging, socially relevant material from the contemporary musical theatre world as they receive the intensive voice, movement and acting training essential for professional-level performance. The scholarship will be awarded based partly upon the financial need of the recipient. However, in keeping with Dena’s impressive record of giving, the award will also be based on the recipient’s involvement in serving his or her community. Why The Theatre Lab? All of us who were members of the company of Ragtime were touched and changed by the experience, including Dena. It was positively challenging and deeply rewarding, and we formed bonds that last to this day. We owe much of this to the warm, collaborative atmosphere created there by our directors, Deb Gottesman and Buzz Mauro. We know from friends and family that Dena felt the same way and believe she would be very pleased to know that her life will continue to help students at The Theatre Lab who love musical theatre and who value serving others.
