Making a Dramatic Difference

The Theatre Lab School of the Dramatic Arts is dedicated to making the artistic and real-life benefits of quality theatre education accessible to everyone—not just those who can afford it or choose to seek it out. Our philosophy is simple, practical and egalitarian:  everyone can perform and performance enhances everyone.

Our programs produce professional actors and other theatre artists and also provide life-changing opportunities for dramatic self-expression to people whom the arts rarely reach: adolescents who have been expelled from school or are in trouble with the law, children of parents struggling to overcome substance abuse, elderly residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities, people battling AIDS and other life-threatening illnesses, teens aging out of the foster care system and, soon, youth facing sexual orientation and gender identity issues.

The Theatre Lab’s innovative arts education, scholarship and outreach programs serving economically and educationally disadvantaged youth and adults have earned its Directors the prestigious Linowes Leadership Award, recognizing D.C.’s “unsung heroes working to improve communities.”
